Founded in 2003, Beagle Paws Rescue is a volunteer driven rescue based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and is now recognized as Canada's largest Beagle-specific rescue organization. Their mission is to bring the Beagle breed indoors, rescuing dogs from neglect and the hunting-dog cycle common to the breed's history, and giving them a second chance as beloved family pets.
Many of the Beagles who come into their care have spent their lives outdoors as hunting dogs, often without proper shelter, socialization, or veterinary attention. Through a dedicated network of volunteers, foster homes, and adoptive families, Beagle Paws works to reverse this cycle, providing medical care, rehabilitation, and the chance to live as an indoor companion for the first time.
Every dog that comes through Beagle Paws is spayed or neutered, vet examined, and dewormed before adoption. All Beagles must be adopted as family pets who live indoors, and every applicant goes through a careful screening process, including an interview and home visit, to ensure a lasting match between dog and family. While the process is thorough, it reflects the organization's commitment to helping adopters understand the lifelong commitment they're making.
Beyond adoptions, Beagle Paws also assists owners looking to rehome their Beagles, offers support to senior and special-needs dogs who are harder to place, and runs a Thrift Store in St. John's where all proceeds go directly toward rescue efforts. The organization also helps dispel common myths about the breed, working to show that Beagles, though scent driven and historically used for hunting, are affectionate, loyal, and wonderful family companions.
