Why Compostable Bags?

If you live in an area with municipal composting for pet waste or have the ability to compost at home, our bags are a better alternative to traditional plastic. Unlike plastic bags that linger for centuries, compostable bags can break down naturally under the right conditions, returning to the earth instead of adding to long-term waste. While composting options vary, choosing compostable when possible helps reduce our reliance on plastic.

Composting pet waste can be a great way to reduce landfill waste—but it’s important to do it safely and correctly.

Check Local Composting Rules

Not all municipal compost programs accept pet waste. Before composting, check with your local waste management service to see if pet waste is allowed. If they do, simply dispose of the bag in your green bin according to their guidelines.

Home Composting for Pet Waste

If you want to compost at home, never add pet waste to regular food or garden compost—dog waste contains bacteria that require special conditions to break down safely. Instead, set up a separate composting system just for pet waste.

Here’s one way to do it:
Choose a designated pet waste compost bin (preferably away from vegetable gardens).
Use high heat (130–160°F / 55–70°C) to properly break down bacteria.
Add materials like sawdust, leaves, or grass clippings to balance the compost.
Let the compost cure for several months before using it for non-edible plants (avoid use in vegetable gardens).

When Composting Isn’t an Option

If composting pet waste isn’t available in your area, the best option is to dispose of it in the trash. This isn’t ideal, as landfills are not designed for organic materials to break down properly. Without the right conditions—like oxygen, heat, and microbial activity—waste in landfills can take much longer to decompose, even if it’s compostable.

We hope that more municipalities will begin to accept compostable bioplastics, making it easier for pet owners to dispose of waste effectively.
